Traveling to Tanzania: Visa & Entry Guide

Tanzania is a dream destination, home to vast savannahs, majestic wildlife, lofty peaks, and tropical islands. But before embarking on your adventure, it’s important to understand the entry requirements, especially visa rules, health mandates, and border processes. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to arrive prepared and start your safari without surprises.

Visa Requirements & Options

Do You Need a Visa?

Most international travelers do need a visa to enter Tanzania. Fortunately, obtaining one has become easier thanks to the e-Visa system. You can also get a visa on arrival at major airports and several land borders (subject to your nationality).

Types of Visas & Fees
  • Single-Entry Tourist Visa – common choice for safari and beach travelers.
  • Multiple-Entry Visa – for those planning multiple visits in a year.
  • Business Visa / Transit Visa – for other travel purposes.
Visa on Arrival Fees
  • U.S. citizens: USD 100
  • Many other nationalities: USD 50 (payable in cash at the border)

Important: Credit cards may not be accepted at border checkpoints — carry the correct amount in U.S. dollars.

Applying for an e-Visa
  1. Visit the official Tanzania Immigration website (immigration.go.tz).
  2. Fill out the application, upload a passport scan, photo, itinerary, and pay the fee online.
  3. Upon approval, print your e-Visa confirmation and present it along with your passport upon arrival.
Health & Other Entry Requirements
Yellow Fever & Vaccinations

If you’re arriving from or have transited through a country with yellow fever risk, you must present a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate. The vaccination should have been done at least 10 days before travel.

Ensure your routine vaccinations are current and consult your doctor about additional shots (e.g., hepatitis, typhoid) depending on your itinerary.

Malaria & Disease Prevention

Some regions in Tanzania are malaria-prone. We recommend taking malaria prophylaxis (when advised) and using mosquito repellent. Use insect repellent, carry hand sanitizer, and practice good hygiene throughout the journey.

Border Entry & Documents Checklist

Here’s what you should have ready when entering Tanzania:

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond entry date
  • At least 2 blank pages in passport
  • Visa or e-Visa confirmation
  • Yellow Fever certificate (if required)
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation or safari booking
  • Sufficient funds / proof of funds
  • Travel and medical insurance (preferably with evacuation coverage)

Border officials may conduct immigration checks and, occasionally, health screenings. Be prompt, respectful, and have your documents prepared.

Tips for 2025 & Beyond
  • Always apply for your visa via the official Tanzania Immigration e-Visa portal to avoid scams.
  • If paying on arrival, bring USD cash (small bills) as a backup.
  • Request a multiple-entry visa if you plan to travel in and out of Tanzania multiple times in a year.
  • Keep digital and paper backups of passport, visa, and itinerary.
  • Monitor travel advisories and health notices, especially for COVID-19 or any new entry rules.
